What's involved?
This mentoring programme is for young people between the age of 11 and 17 years. It helps young people to achieve positive results in their lives through personal application and positive personal decisions. The initiative also has a diversionary aspect to it. We provide avenues for young people to channel their energies on positive activities during their out-of-school hours. The intention is that they use these Œgapš or non-school hours meaningfully and that there is a reduction in the risk of them committing crime or becoming victims of it.
The Arts
Disadvantaged and disaffected youths have opportunities to participate in and enjoy the arts. Such access is limited for children and young people in families with low incomes. Extra curricular activities such as dance classes and instrument lessons, which can help childrenšs development, are often an expense that their parents or carers cannot afford. As a result, children from such households do not get a chance to experience the arts. We aim to redress this inequality. In practical terms they will have access to facilities such as professional dance studios, recording studios, theatres and music instruments. The idea is that they get opportunities to participate in and benefit from the arts in much the same way as their peers from households with high incomes.
