Who's failing who?
Statistics demonstrate that pupils (particularly boys) from ethnic minorities and white working class families are underachieving at school. Interestingly, the statistics also show that when this group enters the education system, they perform as well as children from other ethnic groups and in some cases out perform them. However by Year 6 their level of achievement begins to decline, a trend that for the most part, continues through to completion of Year 11 in secondary school. This data indicates that the mainstream educational system is failing this group of young people.
In the main, the National curriculum does not cater for the fact that some pupils are not natural academics, but rather excel in practical creativity (for example music production, carpentry). In addition, pupils with different learning styles end up underachieving because the mainstream educational system does not cater for their particular learning style. Traditional teaching methods need to be rethought and replaced where necessary if we are to see a turn around. Heartbeatıs objective is to help bring about the much-needed change.
