What's
Involved?
Heartbeat works in partnership with schools and parents
to help pupils whose behavioural difficulties make them
a cause for concern. This school-based programme offers
a range of educational support services that help pupils
with such challenges, to build their confidence and
acquire key life skills (e.g. time management, goal
setting and maintaining good self-esteem), that in turn
help to raise their level of achievement in school.
Heartbeat runs self-development and artistic expression
workshops for pupils referred to the programme by the
school. In addition, the programme integrates music
arts training into a schoolıs existing curriculum. This
helps to spark creativity in referred pupils as well
as enhance their learning experience. The programme
is a model for new classroom learning and teaching methods.

Tackling
truancy & exclusions
A sad reality in many inner city schools is the high level
of exclusions, truancy and disaffected youth. Statistics
shows that many urban youths are disillusioned with the
mainstream education system and society in general. Many
of them do not see the personal relevance of much of the
National Curriculum to their immediate lives. Heartbeat
takes these basic facts into account in the design and
delivery of its youth development for schools programme.
The project is designed to engage such young people with
additional or alternative educational support. We have
created a curriculum which, can effectively work along
side traditional academic disciplines such as English,
mathematics and science. Our training material taps into
the interests of the young people to keep them engaged
and focused on increasing their level of attainment in
school. For example, exposing African or Caribbean pupils
to positive Black History, we have found helps to boost
their self-esteem and erase some of the negative stereotypes
that they are accustomed to. In addition, we can use our
Rap writing skillsı module to help pupils improve their
literacy levels. Such extra curricular training sessions
play an important part in helping to motivate disaffected
pupils and give them a renewed commitment to learning.
Details of topics covered in the programme are on the
back page of this booklet. |
